Creating a Parks Culture in Southeast Atlanta

Since being elected to the Atlanta City Council in 2001, Carla Smith has been a strong advocate for the City’s parks and greenspace. Not only has she consistently supported legislation that benefits parks, she has taken the initiative to improve parks in her District by helping to create and support friends of the park groups.

“I want a friends of the parks group for every park in my district,” says Councilwoman Smith. And she is off to a great start. Benteen, Chosewood, Peoplestown (D.L. Stanton & Four Corners), Jacci Fuller, Phoenix II & III and South Bend Parks have a friends group or are in the process of forming one – all with the support of Councilwoman Smith. No Council District has more friends groups.

Park Pride especially appreciates the Councilwoman’s efforts, because friends groups are the structures through which many of our programs operate. Knowing that a community is organized and motivated makes it easier for Park Pride to direct volunteer groups, micro grants, materials and landscape architect services to support them and their park.

If you are interested in forming a friends of the park group in your community, please contact our office or visit www.parkpide.org

What Your Neighbors Say about Supporting District One Parks

"Jacci Fuller Woodland Garden Park is more than just a public space
tucked into Ormewood Park. It's the green heart of the neighborhood,
bringing residents together as they "dream big" about its future."

Katherine Hester, Friends of Jacci Fuller Park

"Carla has been a tremendous resource for the Friends of Benteen Park as
we came together to create a "Friends of the Park" group and has helped us
as we shape our plan and vision for our neighborhood park."

Adam Brackman, Friends of Benteen Park

"Friends of Chosewood Park is a community group of neighbors devoted to
the redevelopment, cleanup and maintenance of Chosewood Park. We
volunteer our time to the advocacy of the park and serve as a liaison between
its users and city officials. We encourage and welcome your time and involvement."

Matt Wingler, Friends of Chosewood Park

“Carla Smith has been a great friend of all of the parks in District 1
and has supported the hard work of the Friends of Peoplestown Parks
to create a great park in their community. She is a true friend of our parks."
